New Hotel Alert: Manami Resort (Philippines)
This was a delightful discovery — one boutique luxury resort lovers should race to, before this remote area of the Philippines becomes touristy. This is exactly its appeal: Sipalay, Negros Occidental is still untouched by mass tourism, primarily because it’s hard to get to: fly to a small airport in either Bacolod or Dumaguete, likely have a forced overnight, then it’s a 4-hour road transfer (1-hour private air charter possible for $1K/way). It’s not going to be the right choice for the majority of Philippines trips, but for the traveler that values still-unknown destinations with a surprisingly excellent hotel, get there now.
The details are exquisite
Manami Resort opened in 2023, and in 2025 it smartly joined Small Luxury Hotels (SLH). With just 16 villas, it is small, and yes, it is luxury. I was very surprised to learn about this property, and thrilled to find that it is so well done, especially for being so remote. The details are exquisite and they celebrate the handicrafts of the region, which are known to be the best in the Philippines. Everything is so well-designed and provides a strong sense of place.

The rooms are built on a hill, enclosed in nature, with views of a calm cove.
A true hidden gem
The area, Sipalay, is surrounded by small islands and hidden coves. It’s such a rare treat to be on a boat with just a handful of other local boats. Even the coral reefs are still in great shape.
Rates start around ~$300/night. I’m thrilled that this property exists, and that passion projects exist in remote pockets of the world.
